In the food and pharmaceutical industries, high reliability and easy assembly and maintenance play an important role in the development of pump drives or agitators. The shrink discs or shaft couplings from our partner TAS Schäfer are ideal for reliable power transmission. Stainless steel versions are often used to increase the service life and reliability of the connection.
In the field of agitator technology, there is a high level of stress on the components due to possible corrosion, among other things. The processing and whirling up of solids also significantly increases component wear (hydroabrasion).
If agitators have to move against a highly viscous medium or if pumped media contain solids, this can lead to considerable repercussions on the drive system. If the agitator or mixing tool and the drive are connected by a long shaft, this effect is further intensified. This leads to high radial loads and an increased bending moment on the components, which ultimately significantly increases the risk of failure of the entire system.
This wear can be significantly reduced by using friction-locked shaft-hub connections or shaft-shaft connections, which also include shrink discs. The correct design and product selection are particularly important here. We are happy to support you in the design of new systems.
Shrink discs are mounted on the hub and shaft from the outside. Starting with the classic, three-part shrink disc, which consists of two outer rings and an inner ring with opposing conical surfaces, there is also the two-part design.
Compared to the three-part shrink disc, this consists of a thrust ring and an inner ring. Here too, the conical surfaces are arranged opposite each other. Tightening the clamping screws causes the outer rings to move axially on the inner ring, resulting in compression. The inner ring is radially compressed and presses the hollow shaft onto the inner shaft.
TAS manufactures shrink discs as standard for shaft diameters from 18 mm to 920 mm. Torques of up to 19,200 kNm can be transmitted. All series are also available in stainless steel (e.g. material 1.4122).

Rigid shaft coupling
Compared to classic, positive-locking keyway connections (which always have a certain amount of play in the connection due to their design), friction-locking shaft-hub connections are designed to safely transfer the loads that occur, even under alternating loads and load impacts. Due to their compact design, internal shaft-hub connections (clamping sets) are used, for example, for fastening pump impellers to shaft ends. This solution is very easy to maintain due to its good accessibility.
Shrink discs can be easily installed and then removed again non-destructively thanks to the use of clearance fits between the shaft hub and shrink disc. The three-part design in particular offers an enormous advantage here. The simple assembly and disassembly of the shrink discs simplifies system maintenance.
