Metal-bellows Couplings

Metal bellows couplings are torsionally rigid connecting elements that do however allow a slight axial and angular offset between two shafts. There is a wide range of possible applications in drive technology, since the advantages of allowable misalignment and wear and tear with an economical design are quite advantageous compared to cardan shafts. In automation technology, metal bellows couplings are often used as the connecting elements for servo motors and stepper motors and also as miniature bellows couplings, for example for pulse generators, servo potentiometers or tachometer shafts.

The special geometric shape of the metal bellows ensures high torsional rigidity. At the same time, it enables compensation in the axial and radial misalignment as well as a small angular misalignment. The materials are mostly stainless steel alloys. The shafts are usually connected in a non-positive and/or positive manner by clamping, with bushings or by clamp screws. Form-fitting connections using feather keys, splined shafts or other toothed elements are not suitable, as they are only partially free of play and the shaft diameters cannot be fully used.
