Project presentation: Development of a special gearbox

19.04.2024

Regardless of whether optimisation or new development is required. We work together with our customers to develop customised drive concepts. Supported by modern CAD systems, we plan, analyse and simulate the ideal drive solution at the highest level. In this project, our design team took on the development of a special gearbox for the maintenance of large compressors.

Task / requirements
When servicing large compressors, it is necessary for the crankshaft to be driven alternatively via a chain wheel. The pistons in the cylinders must be moved and positioned for maintenance.

For this purpose, a compact but very robust gearbox is required, which drives via a sprocket wheel. In addition to the required power, the output sprocket must be designed to be axially movable. This enables precise positioning of the shaft unit in ships, for example.

Problem solution / design
The solution chosen was a vertically positioned drive with a first stage as a worm gear set. The worm gear transmits to a shaft with a spur gear, which then realises the second stage on the output shaft. The output stage is positively connected to the output shaft, which can be positioned axially via a handwheel using a toothing profile.

Project conclusion
This project was tailor-made for FLOHR. The different gearing stages in the middle module range are part of our company's core expertise. The selected steel-welded construction was designed in-house and realised on our own machines. We also supplied the peripherals, such as the triplex sprocket set (1,400 mm diameter at the output) or the clamping elements and motor clamping systems. An optimal project with a high level of customer satisfaction.
