Case Study for modernisation of eRTG-cranes

27.11.2023

Old installations often cause problems that outweigh the solutions they offer. The case study of our partner Johannes Hübner Giessen demonstrates how a fault-prone encoder system with a multitude of individual components can be transformed into a safe and low-maintenance system solution.

Electrified rubber tired gantry cranes (eRTG cranes) move without a guide rail and can be used flexibly throughout the entire terminal area. Against this background, it is particularly important that the position, speed and revolutions are measured correctly and reliably to ensure that the crane functions safely. For one of our customers, an old encoder solution with a distribution gear and a multitude of individual measuring devices and components was frequently causing faults and also causing problems requiring complex repair work.

Johannes Hübner Giessen developed a reliable and simple complete solution with just one device. This solution reduces the risk of severe system defects such as fractured coupling and makes system maintenance much easier.

Hubwerk / Trommel: Erhöhte Zuverlässigkeit und reduzierte Wartungszeiten im eRTG-Kran mit U-ONE-Compact

Hoist / Drum: U-ONE-Compact increases realiability and reduces maintenance time in eRTG crane

  • Reduced risk of coupling breakage
  • Easy configuration
  • Increased system reliability
  • Increased safety
  • Spare parts optimization
  • Component reduction

Task

Old solution with distribution gear
Old solution with distribution gear

The customer had to use different devices to measure position, velocity and overspeed. This caused some problems:

  • Indirect measurement of signals through different shafts
  • Misalignment of shafts and couplings
  • Excessive delay in troubleshooting faults for each component
  • Time-consuming calibration process for the cam limit switches
  • Various replacement parts that need to be kept in stock

Solution

The implemented solution provides a direct connection to the drum shaft. Due to this the risk of coupling breakage is reduced. The system solution U-ONE-Compact offers a quick and easy configuration which includes self-diagnostics for fault detection.

Furthermore it comes with a preset function, which is ideal for replacing hoist ropes. It is possible to copy the programming for cranes with the same movement. Utilization of the same copper cabling for connection to the PLC is possible. Summarized, the reliability and safety was increased
